Delisshhyous.

Once again, I had a jammed packed weekend. All I can say is, its great to live it up, its dang fun and a ton of sh*t happens and theres a sense of fulfillment, but whheewww.. is it ever tiring. I feel like i need 2 days of sleep to get my energy back. Maybe I gotta work on my stamina.

Here are the highlights:

1. Right after work on Friday, the pre-game begins. I started drinking at 6:30pm. We then made our way down to DRU's 30th birthday party down at the Alibi Room. Dru's a popular guy, so it was a good sized crowd and it was a great mix. Made a point of it to try to talk to as many people as i could. it was tons of fun. its amazing how dance can really open people up... its a great ice breaker.

2. I can't remember what time i got home early Saturday morning, but i had to wake up at 10am. My niece is turning 1, and her parents decided to have a party at CEFA which is like a pre-shool/day care center type joint. Place was packed with kids and had a ton of cool rooms and a gym. I felt outta my element, i'm really not that great with kids... that and i was pretty much still drunken from the night before.

3. Later that day, headed to DTP (Driven To Perform) which is an import car show. A buddy of mine entered the contest and a couple of us were there to show some support. The show was pretty good actually.. there was tons to see. When all was said and done tho, my buds didn't win and was feelin kinda down. we cruised for a bit afterwards and eventually ended up at my brother's place for some after party eats and drinks. We had some good chatter there. Talked about joinin a gym and working out on a regular... definitely something to look forward to.

4. Sunday morning, wake up early AGAIN. this time for some Dim Sum. Bern's sister and fiancé are in town visiting from Ottawa. We decided to go to Greek Fest in the afternoon...it was my first time going to it...it was pretty cool.. i liked smelling the bbq meats.. but i was stuffed so didn't get any. Gotta go next year and do it up big.

5. Sunday evening had a big family dinner to celebrate my niece's birthday. actually it was birthday party #3 for her.. and there's gonna be another one on thursday. Dinner was quite tasty. mostly seafood. we even had abalone.. which was another first for me. i dunno.. it was good but, it wasn't delicious. makes me wonder why its so expensive and considered to be a delicacy.
Next weekend: VEGAS.

Concept

Toyota FT-HS

Toyota Hybrid X Concept
Lexus LF-A

KTM X-Bow
Dodge Demon

BMW CS

Audi R8

Why is it that production cars NEVER look as cool as the original concepts? I've always enjoyed looking at concept cars... its kinda like looking at the future isn't it? Its nice just to look at them for form. I always think the designers of these concepts must have such a great sense of abstraction. Any industrial designer for that matter. When they create something, its not like a graphic designer where often, its just a fusion of forms, subject matter, artwork, whatever content... kinda like a DJ makin a new beat by mixin 2 different ones that he/she found. With ID, its different. I mean they do have other cars/chairs/lamps/etc to reference, but the overall form.. thats gotta be completely intuitive. Its more like other art disciplines in this sense.. like dance, or abstract painting. This is the part of ID that i love. The end result is more about feeling rather then something comprehensible.

Chair As Icon

I remember way back in foundation year while attending Emily Carr, I noticed other students had a project where they were to build a chair. I took the same course as they did, but happened to get a different instructor, and unfortunately my class did not get the pleasure to do the same project. At any rate, that must have been the first time I really started to appreciate chair design and industrial design in general.
3 of my favourite chairs happen to be the barcelona chair, the eames lounge, and Le Corbusier's LC2. Yes, all 3 are classic designs and when I think about them today, I think to myself, "aren't they EVERYONE's favourite chairs?" Kinda makes me wanna learn more about other designs, and find lesser known chairs that I can dream about having in my future home. I guess it's the sneakerhead in me... you know always gotta be different, or always tryin to one up the otha sneakerhead. Its childish, but I can't deny that its part of the game.

ANYWAY, here's a look at a cool project that Dirk Winkel manifested. Its my 3 favourite chairs in stackable plastic form!

Kids and Money

I just watched this short film online.. and um.. it just reminds me that I still have a TON of growing up to do! I'm watchin it and think to myself how ridiculous I can get with my spending. Too bad they don't interview OLD kids like me.

From Hypebeast:

Filmmaker Laura Greenfield recently created a documentary on the relationship between kids and money in the Los Angeles area. You’ll find situations at opposite spectrum which really enables you to classify your own personal financial situation. Some kids in LA are caught up in this perpetuating cycle where if you aren’t rocking expensive stuff then you aren’t popular. Another interesting point one of the interviewee brings up is our generation’s obsession with instant gratification. The interviewee openly confesses that buying a new pair of shoes results in that instant happiness that saving for a car won’t bring. You can view this interesting short film at NY Times Shorts.

A Walk To Remember.

Okay, I apologize for the umm... "happy" title... and it really wasn't that great of a walk to remember anyway. Been sick all week and on top of that my car has been outta commish... so i've been taking the public transit home. Today, i decided to walk from the skytrain station instead of busing. Its a fairly short walk anyway... but i really enjoyed it.. even though i was coughing most of the way. Its been a while since I just took a slow walk through my neighborhood. I noticed so many things that i normally would have missed or not paid attention to. For instance, i saw a group of teens playing badminton in an alley. Remember this is east van we're talkin bout. they weren't the regular type of kids you would normally see play badminton. I peaked into people's yards.. and my gosh, i didn't think there were backyards like the ones that i saw today that still exist. Some had full on playgrounds, ponds, scattered toys, just huge grassy areas... and all not done in a fancy way, more like in a make-shift way. They brought me back to my childhood. Just walking along Kingsway too, noticed a bunch of restaurants which i pass by every freakin day, but have never really looked. got a good look into them and thought to myself why wouldn't i come here to eat? why not? ANyway, it was nice to slow things down a bit for once and take things in.

Beastie Boys killing it live on Letterman '04

That's a hype performance.

Simpson's Classical Guitar

Nice party trick. Danny, you gotta learn that ish.. just think of the next BBQ at yer place. Guitar sing-a-long and sausage.

Keith and the Girl.

These 2 have been keeping me awake at work lately. Dayam good show. They're a couple from New York who are comedians by trade, but have also been making a career outta this podcast. They've also got quite a Canadian cult following. On the show they pretty much talk about ANYTHING.. from lupus to black guys who like bigger white woman. They tell it like it is. You can find this program here: http://www.keithandthegirl.com/ or you can simply run a search for Keith and the Girl using your iTunes browser.

Sneaker archive continued...

Dang, what a long day.. I can't believe i caught something over the weekend. Throats not doing so good, feverish, and feeling nauseous every so often. Hopefully this germ won't last too long.

anyway.. on with the shoes...

12. Air Max 180

Spotted these joints on the web. Turns out that they were samples and never released. One thing that i do really like about samples (aside from them being rare) is that Nike still makes them in Korea just like how all their airs were made back in the 90s. i gotta say, i really do enjoy these pink beauties. I really like the fact that someone at Nike actually had the guts to put these colours together on a men's runner.

Less thinking, more doing.

Had a jammed packed end of week/weekend. A bunch of things happened that seemed to give me a bunch of optimism... and now it feels like things are going to start to happen.

Here are some of the highlights:

1. Had an evening out with our good friend Norman who was visiting from TO. He said this to me that night: sometimes its not about deciding what you want to do with the rest of your life, sometimes what you do for the rest of your life finds you.

2. Played some poker with some good good company. Its been a while since the last time i've played. Was the first to get knocked out, but it didn't matter, it was just nice to hang out with dem peeps. There was some dayam good BBQ sausage too!

3. Went to a dinner party with what seemed to be the entire vball community of Vancouver. Definitely an interesting experience. It really forced me to break outta my shell a bit. Meet new people, re-connect with old ones. High fiving with strangers. It made it feel like being social could be an easy thing to do once again.

4. Ate some Pho with some friends. Always delicious and a good time. Some chatter about settin up shop and doing some screen printing has really gotten me excited.

5. Walked around downtown while the sun was blazing. Got some attention for some art i did on Bern's kicks. Actually had some good conversation about it... potentially more on this LATER.. don't want to reveal too too much before anything actually happens.

6. Celebrated our Cambie Volleyball League win at the Eatery. Out of 24 teams we managed to win our division (Silver) this year. Part of the prize was a $100 gift certificate to the Eatery. We ate well. Definitely a satisfying meal. Afterwards we went to La Casa Gelato. I had blueberry cheesecake gelato on a cone to top off my weekend.

Things are starting to look a little more clearly. I really do just gotta live my life and not question it as much as I have been. Good things will happen if you just keep on pedalling.

I saw this quote on the Hundreds blog a while back: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”

And thus I just gotta sustain this and keep pushing forward.

Run for the kids.

Finally finished this year's 24 Hour Relay shirt design. So far the response hasn't been as good as i thought it would be, but i like it. we'll see, the whole team hasn't seen it just yet, we'll just wait for the responses on email. Hoping to get this sucker into production this week.

Change The World

First time i saw this type of technology was at Bruce Mau's exibit: Massive Change. I knew it would be the wave of the future.. and here it is.. well here it almost is anyway. Remember when Elisha Cuthbert was on the show Popular Mechanics for kids? Can't believe she's dating that Sean Avery guy.

Me Me Me.

Gotta find a way to change things up. Gotta get back on track. Its been way too easy to just fall back into the same routine everyday of going to work playing some kind of sport on my spare time and spending my paycheck away on brewskis over the weekends. Gotta put more effort into it.. gotta prioritize.. gotta do things that I want to do. I've chosen a challenging career.. unstable at times. always gotta stay at it.. keep fresh with ideas, working that creative mind. I'm frustrated.. i really am. somethings gotta change. finding time isn't the only problem. feel stuck. can't seem to progress. I want to be that go getter. Need to practice the secret. Staying positive and being attractive ain't as easy as it sounds! I feel outta wack. Lost a sense of self. Can't make decisions for the life of me. Definitely in need of soul searchin. Not sole searchin.. cuz i have enough trainers to last me a good while... but gotta find that SOUL. WHo the f*ck am I and why am I still stuck in a quarter life crisis? Its gonna be about me. gonna be about ME.
