I'm probably late on this, but I just discovered this online sketch tool called odosketch... its pretty darn cool. Not only does it save your drawing, but it also records your process. So you can replay it afterwards. Fun! There are quite a few good drawings featured on this site. I think I'll try doing my 5 minutes-a-day drawing exercises using this tool. Since you can just copy the embed code, it makes for a quick post. Can't wait to practice my tablet skills on this. Here's my first experiment using a mouse.

As Dru has reminded me, I have a horrible sense of time. Its a definite must that I improve on this if I plan on being successful at anything. Along with time, I also have trouble dealing with anything having to do with factual numbers. Hard numbers scare me! I've developed a fear of hard truths. I think I like the idea that everything can be bent and molded into something that appears pleasing to me. Ummm.. yah.. time to face the facts. So as Dru has recommended.. look at the numbers as often as you can. Check your bank account.. know exactly whats going on.. look at your watch.. how much time do you really have?

I had a great conversation with Vince and Danny earlier this evening. Picked their brains a bit and ask them on how I could improve my communication skills when dealing with business matters. They both provided good advice. One of the themes they recommended was that I try remembering something interesting that someone else tells me and regurgitating that information to another party. Its simple enough and should help me talk to more people. I should be interacting and participating in conversation instead of being the silent guy at the table. It should also help me develop a stronger opinion on things. I'll try to do this at least once a day.

Just last night, Steve, who is a very good story teller, explained to me – in less than 5 minutes – what the TV Series “Lost” is all about. He broke it down in a very simple and easily understood manner, season by season. I wish I could gather my thoughts like that and explain something to someone else with such clarity. My thoughts are always jumbled and a speak like an idiot. ANYWAY.. I digress, cuz I’m not posting about my speech impediment, rather I want to talk about my feelings. And what I’m feeling right now is sad. :0( Boooooo. hehe. I’ve got all these thoughts in my head and its taking up all my memory.. everything else is starting to crash. Its time to ablate and write/type it all out.

So what happened is that I just came back from an incredible trip in Hawaii...yes, yes.. what the f*ck does this guy have to be sad about right? Yah I’m aware that it is completely selfish and that I have a bad attitude towards this whole thing about feeling sad.. heck I should be totally recharged and ready to go right? NOPE. What actually ended up happening was a punch in the throat. A feeling of let down. Its been hard to swallow and embrace anything lately. I feel like I came back with a clean perspective of my current life. That somebody just gave my life back to me in its current state and I can’t help but feel sh*tty about it. Here take it.. this is yours. F*ck this sh*t is heavy! Do I have to take it? I came back a different person from when I left. I came back with no worries... smiles ear to ear, but of course... the Rich that exists here was just waiting for me.

Its been an introspective week. Trying to figure out why I feel the way I feel. Yes, coming from paradise back to work is a stark contrast and anybody would feel somewhat sad about leaving paradise. Which brings me back to Steve and “Lost”.. he explained that in the 4th or 5th Season(?) the people on the island found a way to escape, but when given the opportunity half of them elected to stay, finding that their lives on the island were much better than their past lives that they left behind. BLAU... thats exactly how I feel. except... I would want to stay on the island only if all my friends and family were with me! haha. I want everything damnit! At any rate.. I dont think I’m trying to say that I reaaally want to start a new life in Hawaii and leave my life in Vancouver for good. I love Vancouver... I would never do something drastic like that. What I think has happened is that I realize that I’ve made a mess of things here. That I’ve set myself up for sadness and frustration. The good news is that I also realize the possiblity of living a happier life. If I can be THAT happy in Hawaii.. why couldn’t I bring atleast some of that style of living back home. Why the f*ck not?

Okay, so after all this blabber.. whats the result? Gotta change things up and make some rules for myslef to ensure a change in my life. Maybe not so much rules... just guides.. so I remember to change. I tend to forget that I’m not satisfied and just get stuck in the routine again. Alright.. so here it is:

1. Treat my 9-5 as a 9-5. Be more consistent with my hours.. get to work early and reduce the OT. Work is work. Leave it there.

2. Complete all side projects/freelance work and reject anything new coming in. Say NO Rich, its okay to say NO. I must free up my time and concentrate on personal projects for a while. Gotta nurture that creativity and not worry so much about doing business and pleasing others. F*ck it, gotta make ME happy now!

3. Exercise: run/bike/weights/basketball/vball/dance. I love sports and activities.. I cannot live without it.

4. Friends. Make a point of seeing my friends atleast once a week. They are important to me and they balance me out.

5. Try being an influencer and not an accomadator. I think this requires a post of its own to explain fully.. but basically gotta learn to be confident and be more forward.. be sure about my ideas and not just take orders from others. Lets RUN THIS SH*T.. take charge! Stop aplogizing.. no more of that weak sh*t. F*ck the servant, make everyone happy type attitude.. its not working.

6. Last but not least. Pay attention to Easy and make her feel special. We spend tons of time together, but that doesn’t mean that I’ve been a good partner. She improves me, I gotta show my appreciation.

Will this ensure happiness in my life? We’ll see.

I recently applied for an Art Director position and went through the interview process and today the Creative Manager called me in to give me feedback. I didn't get the job. However, his feedback and grading system was thorough and for the most part very positive and encouraging. I scored quite high and it surprised him. It actually stroked my ego a bit (and that's saying a bunch coming from the most insecure, unconfident, introverted douche bag designer out there.. gaaawwd this self-degradation stuff is soo unhealthy). So I can't say that I'm entirely disappointed that I didn't get the job. Yes of course, a part of me thinks I deserve that job as much as any other candidate, but most of what I feel is a sense of movement. A sense of figuring things out for myself without having someone else hold my hand. A sense of grade. Yes a result. What matters to me the most these days is that I have results. That I've been putting in work for real and that what people think of my work matters to my growth in my career. We're not playing around anymore.. crossing my fingers all the time and just hoping that things work out in the end. This sh*t is real.. and it will work out in the end... because I am going to make it work.

Who said riding a scooter isn't cool?! The Honda Ruckus (Zoomer in Asia/Europe) has been around since 2002 and has been gaining popularity these past few years especially with the rising gas prices. There are plenty of aftermarket parts for moding which makes this gas saver even more appealing, though I guess spending the mulla you originally wanted to save on some fat wheels and a loud exhaust does seem kind of questionable? AAAcckk.. I'm gettin old.. f*ck it, those moded Ruckus' are freakin nice! and I want one!

By the way.. the Ruckus can hold 5L of gas at one time while giving you an average of 100km/2.5L. Okay so 200km everytime you fill up which will cost you bout $5.

Recently, I've been blessed with a brand new entertainment system along with an HDPVR and with the PVR came a ton of channels I didn't have previously.. like the NBA in HD and Raptors TV. I gotta say, I haven't watched this much NBA action since the late 90s... and I'm hooked again!

Have you caught the NBA analyst show: NBA TV? I've been trying to catch it more often nightly... it features Ahmad Rashad, Gary Payton and Chris Webber. These guys are hilaaarious! Love watchin the highlights with these 3 commenting/shouting/blurting out random noises.. they've got great chemistry and comedy. Its super casual.. Its almost like they're hangin out at the barbershop chattin up hoops. Speaking of which, the above commercial is CLASSIC.

Happy Happy New Years.. again! Chinese New Years is one of those occasions that is both strange and wonderful. Strange because it almost feels as if it doesn't belong.. that its not recognized as a STAT holiday, so its always feels out of place. Heck I'm at work right now, something that is FORBIDDEN on Chinese New Years..hehe. So it's strange and I never really "prepare" for CNY like I do for Christmas or (regular?) New Years. Its wonderful well.. mostly cuz I still receive red envelopes!! But it's also wonderful cuz every year it seems like it's a second chance to start the year once again. If the first part of the year hasn't gone quite your way just yet.. well... no worries cuz you can make your resolutions in Chinese.

New Year, New Reality

It's already five days deep into the new year and I'm still feeling hungover from all the holiday "cheer." Call me a grinch if you will, but the holidays are feeling less and less like the holidays! They're getting more and more jam packed with events, things to do, people to shop for... and less and less time to myself. The last three to four weeks are a BLURR to me... the memories play back in fast forward in my head.

Please please don't misunderstand... I do these things and go to these places because I want to and not because I feel obligated... of course I love my friends and family. Yes, I know.. the holiday season is a time for giving. So now that I've given myself to the holidays and taken a break from my own reality, January has given me a huge SLAP in the face. A slap of reality.

The backhand comes in the form of a huge Visa bill, a large number on the weigh scale and most importantly a pending decision about the future of my career. The weight that I've packed on does concern me.. but i know that basketball and volleyball will work itself back into my weekly routine soon enough. Now, the reality of waking up unemployed has undoubtedly hit me the hardest.. the uncertainty of when my next pay check will be has never been comfortable (I don't know how all you freelancers do it!).

As I sit here at my desk typing away, I feel my shoulders tighten up.. the stress is building. 2009 is going to be a big year for me. 2009 is going to be the year that 2008 was supposed to be! Some big decisions are going to be made... and there's going to be a ton of work to go along with those decisions... all of it will amounting to catapulting my life into adulthood. NO that doesn't mean I'm still a virgin stoopid! What it means is that I have to work twice as hard this year.. to make up for all the procrastination. Life around me has certainly moved on while I feel like I have stood still (in my career) for the past five years. Time to get a move on Rich and get to that next Rich Day.

New Rule

WOOPS!! Welp.. on the very day that I posted a few rules about drinking, Elaine and I have already broken it! well.. kinda.. and we did find ourselves in a situation that we did not predict: FREE DRINKS. Okay, so here was the scenario.. we attended Elaine's company Christmas part down at the Waterfront Hotel. We knew that there wasn't going to be an open bar – instead they gave us 2 free drink tickets – so we weren't worried about going over our limit. So we each got 2 gin and tonics and that was fine... but during dinner, they made an announcement that they would be providing 4 free bottles of wine per table! We only had six people at our table and the others weren't drinking sso much. Okay... so heck.. we were there.. dressed up... with a bunch of free drink in front of us.. what else are we supposed to do?!! haha. There's another reason too.. Elaine hates her job and works very hard at it.. so she always sees these types of scenarios as opportunities to drink what she deserves! Someone made a speech about appreciating all the spouses and partners out there for dealing with their stressed out CHC employees.. its been a rough year.. so all the more reason to drink up! so what does this all mean?

4. When you have a personal vendetta over a company and they are the ones paying for the booze, drink away. Just make sure you have a safe ride home.

Non-Alcoholic Holidays

A little more than a month ago, Elaine and I agreed that we were consistently drinking to an excess, so we made a pact to try to cut down on the alcohol. Our primary goals for this pact are for better health, saving money and of course safer streets. So here were the rules that we discussed:

1. Absolutely NO DRINKING and DRIVING: this rule should go without saying, but I have to admit, I've been careless in the past.. having a few at a nearby friend's place and thinking it would be okay to drive home. I'm going to be more responsible with this one from now on. I can't say I can commit to the zero tolerance rule, cuz sometimes I enjoy a glass of wine with my steak, but that's about where it has to stop. One drink with a meal I think is okay.

2. Don't buy drinks at a club or lounge: well... mostly because they're EXPENSIVE. So this rule requires some planning, if I'm heading downtown for some good times, I'm going to pre-drink first! Now, this rule has a clause though and it is based on special occasions like a birthday or a graduation or whatever. It's only right that you can buy yourself and your buddy a drink when there's a good reason to celebrate! I believe we agreed that on these occasions, three drink each person rule will be enforced.

3. Three drink limit: when at home or at a friend's place (basically when the alcohol is from the BC Liquor Store) we'll stick to a three drink maximum. Three beers, three glasses of wine, three shots, three martini's, etc. etc. .. these of course are ORs and not ANDs.

I think these rules might be updated along the way.. I'm sure we're going to run into scenarios where these rules won't apply and we'll wonder what to do. Anyway, I think it's a good start and these current rules do provide some sort of guideline.

For now, we're going to try to make it til the end of this year with these rules, but with the holiday season and its impending celebrations and parties, this task that we've set for ourselves is going to prove quite challenging... cuz well.. I think we both just love to PARTY!

Life is good right now. It really is. There's not much that I can complain about. Yet... I've realized that there's still something wrong with me that I haven't been able to fix. Not being able to find a remedy is frustrating cuz these days I feel like I can fix anything. Got a problem with health? Go see the doctor. Having relationship issues? Lets talk it out and then hug it out. Short on the funds? We can get the books straightened out. There's a solution for everything. Right? Well, the thing that I am struggling with seems to have no quick solutions.

What I'm talking about is a creative block that I've been stuck with since leaving Emily Carr in 2002. Something happened to me during this time. I mean I definitely failed in various projects in the later years at school and have felt shameful of some presentations. I understand this and I've gotten over it. The trauma of all that happening can only last so long. I also believe that one learns more by failing. So I get it... I'm not going to be bothered by past failures and I shouldn't be afraid of any new failures.. f*ck it just bring it on.... yet I'm still left with the problem of a blank canvas.

I wouldn't say I've done absolutely NOTHING creative in the past 6 years... in reality I've done many different things.. some of which I'm proud to say that I did. Though it never came as easy as it used to.. and it doesn't feel like its completely me. I know what it is... I haven't found the creative vessel that I can pour all my guts into yet. I know I have the skills, but I'm on auto-pilot, a robot. A reluctant robot.

I've been given many interesting projects in my "career" as a graphic designer. A bunch that my brain had latched onto.. thinking how great would it be if I got this video game done, or this graphic tee, or how bout this restaurant branding. It all seemed so exciting and I felt that I had the skills to do all of it, but something wasn't clicking. When I was faced with the work, my heart said NO. And it was always a big enough NO that I actually feel heartbroken. I would complete some projects and wouldn't with others... hating the process every time. Just turn off all my feelings and hope that the auto-pilot could complete the job.

I just don't get it. My brain just won't function without my heart's permission.

Something happened. I don't know what.

A part of me died or was left behind...

but I must press on. I'm not good at doing anything else.

I draw to work. I work to live.

I think I need to lock myself in the “LAB” for a good long while. I need to be Dr. Frankenstien and find the god in me. Not to be sacrilegious or anything. What I mean is I have to force myself to learn how to be creative again. Or to be a creator. A producer. My career depends on it.

I had this dream early this morning. It really shook me up, but not in a way that a nightmare would. It had nothing to do with feeling a sense of fear, instead it wast about fear itself. I can't say I remember all that much, but the impression it left is quite clear.

So it starts off with me dying. I don't know how.. I just lay there dead. I then become aware that my life has ended and that I'm now a ghost. A lost soul. My body gets taken away by medics.. and during this process family and friends start to appear. As my body travels, as a ghost I follow along and I'm somehow able to communicate to anybody that I want. I have these conversations with them, but not with the actual individual more like their souls leave their body in order to speak with me. This part is jumbled, but I do remember having a conversation with someone that I can't recognize. He tells me that I died early and that I didn't finish my journey. That I did not fulfill my dreams. He proceeds to break my life down in a simple manner and points out exact moments where I had opportunities to progress, but failed to do so. I had the choice every time to be successful and turned the other way instead. "Why?" he asks.. I have no answer. "Because you were afraid. Look, you were even too afraid to ask a simple question, or here, when you wanted this to happen, but were too afraid to give your opinion. Where does all this nonsensical fear come from?" I look at all those situations as a dead person and it all seemed so ridiculous. Such simple things that I was unable to conquer. I mean, most of it was just talking. It's not like I had to climb any mountains or fight any fires. Just talk.

While talking to this faceless person, I lose track of where my body went. I'm not sure what to do, but I know that I must look for it. The dream spins me into places I've been to before in other dreams. –For example, I always have reoccurring nightmares of "impossible" bridges. Bridges that are incredibly high and have no railing on the sides, bridges that end and you just fall off of them, bridges that you have to drive upside down on in order to get to the other side. It could seem like an awesome rollercoaster ride, but whenever I have these nightmares, I get scared sh*tless.– I get taken to all these scary places and situations and realize that they are challenges. One of them was again a bridge with intense fog. It's super high and narrow and I know that my body is on the other side of it. I run across it without flinching. I feel different. I'm not afraid. This fearlessness, why didn't I have the ability when I was alive? Being dead, I have nothing to lose.

I cross the bridge and face several other challenges. I still can't find my body, but I know I'm getting somewhere. I start to feel incredibly sad that I died. I think of all the people I love and all the things I love doing. I feel desperation. I start screaming. Praying. PLEASE PLEASE!!! I need one more chance! Please give me one more chance to..

There it is.. I see it in the corner of my eye.

I wake up.

As a Canadian, I'm supposed to vote next week, but I really dont have a clue of whats going on in Canadian politics! I tried taking this quiz to help me choose a party I can get down with, but I felt that it was quite vague and was left confused with some of the choices I had on the quiz. Now, having said all this, its pretty clear to me that I would vote for Obama and the Democratic party that is if I were an American.

It's still runnin through my body actually, but I just had a big lunch... it wont be long before the itis kicks in. I gotta say though.. after drinking the coffee.. I've been speedin through my work like it was a race.... which is a big deal for a guy who has the attention span of a goldfish. Is coffee the cure? F*ck Ritalin.. give me expresso.

Update: its now an hour since lunch and dang.. I'm STILL buzzin. Not bad not bad.. cure for my A.D.D. aand my ITIS. I gotta say though.. dont really enjoy going to the washroom so often.. and it makes my pee daang stanky. My breaff kinda stinks too.

Ranks in my top 3 concerts I've ever been to. Actually.. its like a 3-way tie between Kanye West Touch The Sky Tour, Breakestra/Dilated Peoples/Jurassic 5, and Alicia. She was AMAZING. The sound was crisp and clear, lighting was dramatic, the way she played with the crowd was entertaining, she transitioned from one great song to the next like she was telling a story, the Orpheum was a perfect venue... and of course she looked so beautiful.

Trek District

I've been helping Elaine select a bicycle for the past couple of weeks. She only just learned how to ride a bike so it's very exciting and I want her first bike to be a special one. I have to say I've gotten a bit obsessed about bikes since the start of this shopping experience. Researching online, visiting as many bike shops as we can, test riding all the different bikes... it has all been quite pleasurable... the side-effect... it makes me want one too!!! and in a bad way. Well, there's no way I can afford a new bike right now, but I can always dream (don't worry D, I'm going to buy your bike to tie me over).

This Trek District has caught my eye. I eventually want to end up with a clean and simple city/urban bike... with looks as good as a fixie, but without the compromise of NO BRAKES. I just can't get over how unpractical it is to ride in hilly Vancouver without brakes. The Trek District is a one speed with a belt drive, which I also find to be a great feature. It makes it a quieter ride and it's greaseless. The brake cables are hidden, the wheels are powder coated orange which goes great with the vintage grey frame. MSRP is about $900 USD and it is due to release in November 08. I gotta try this bike out.
